A LETTER TO MY DOCTOR

BODY SHAMED BY DOCTOR MINUTES AFTER SURGERY

So I wrote him a letter…

9 days ago, I got a procedure done. While I was in the recovery room, my doctor approached my mother, who was in the waiting room, in an unexpected way.

While my mom was beyond grateful that my surgery went well and was celebrating this special day, my doctor brought up my weight negatively and critically.

How dare you?

This moment was supposed to be special for my mom and me. Remind you, this doctor is a facial plastic surgeon. Bringing up my weight is NOT his place and is very inappropriate.

If you are a doctor and are concerned about your patient's weight, how about starting off by saying, “what’s going on?”. Then, listen to what the patient has to say BEFORE being judgemental.

If doctors gave me the chance to answer that question, they would hear all of the AMAZING  hard work I have put into myself and my health since June. They would learn that I had a bad 2 years, but for the past 5 months, I have been making enormous healthy changes for myself, and I am thriving.

Happiness does not come from how you look. When I was at my lowest point in life, I was skinnier than I have ever been. And was I happy? Not in the slightest.

True beauty comes from the inside.

It is easier said than done, but I will NOT give doctors like this the power to lower my self-esteem and set me back. I will not allow them to ruin where I am right now. I am truly thriving right now. I am better than I have ever been in my entire life. And no human being can strip that from me.

If you are a victim of body shaming, no matter what size you are,  I urge you to take steps to make yourself feel better and practice self-love. Don’t let their words brew inside you and consume you. Don’t hide! For me, I chose to write my doctor a letter. Sending this letter brought me from being an insecure girl to a powerful woman.

Please do not ask me the name of this surgeon.  I would still recommend using him because he is truly one of the best and so talented. This post is for you to relate to and be inspired by.
